Are Eating Disorders Genetic?

[Music] Dear Emily. My mom suffered from anorexia when she was in her twenties, and she says that I am more likely to get an eating disorder because she had one. Is that true? You know, it probably is true that we know that eating disorders have a genetic component, and that there are temperament traits and characteristics that put people more at risk and that those are genetically transmitted So, you probably are at a higher risk. The good news is that if you make sure to maintain positivity in your relationship with food, and make sure that you keep your body image strong, make sure you’re coping well with your feelings, getting enough rest, getting enough exercise, getting enough to eat, you’ll probably be fine, but know that you are at a little bit higher of a risk, so make sure to keep the conversation going.
