Meet Allison Jay, MD, Pediatric Medical Genetics | Ascension Michigan

I’m Dr. Allison Jay and I’m a clinical
geneticist I always enjoyed helping people
including the elderly and my grandparents and I really wanted to help
people I became interested in genetics in
healthcare because I quickly realized genetics is at the base of everything it
encodes our eye color hair colors and also cancer-fighting properties so I
realized genetics is at the crux of everything The most rewarding part of my job is
working with my patients every day they really are caring about their own
families and since I’m in genetics knowledge of their health condition can
really impact the entire family when new patients come to me I want them
to know I’m going to use their genetic information their family history to help
optimize their care hopefully with appropriate surveillance
we can prevent cancer or at least catch it when it’s quite early so they can
have better health outcomes Listening is critical in taking family
histories and understanding my patients concerns I had one mentor who told me if
you listen the patients will tell you the answer to their medical issue and I
really take that to heart and pursue active listening and try to listen to
what my patients are saying so I can give them the best care possible I really enjoy being involved with the
Notre Dame community I’m an alumni of Notre Dame so I’m involved in a Notre
Dame woman’s book club we’re having a cookie exchange coming up because of the
holiday season so I enjoy baking and I also enjoy running and going to the
Detroit Symphony
